Something is very rotten in the state of Japan.
Long regarded as a pedophile's paradise, the Land of the Rising Sun in the Noughties is awash with a sickening plethora of products that make sex objects of prepubescent girls and the almost national fetish for schoolgirl sexiness is seeking ever younger subjects.
Spa! (7/30) notes that the government dealt outright pedophiles a heavy blow with the 1999 enactment of the law banning child pornography and child prostitution.
But the legislation also spawned a new breed of young men - those who date women of their own age, but lust after little girls no older than 15.
"Back in '99, we ran a black-and-white photo spread featuring three girls under 15 and it attracted as much attention as it would have if done in full color," Spa! hears from Suganuma-san, a reporter for Weekly Playboy,the first major magazine to bring underage sex into the mainstream market.
"I think younger girls allowed readers to shift their fantasies from women they could get their hands on to girls that they can show affection for. If we use models of an age above a high school student's, we have to give the spread added value with headlines like 'Look at her Whopping Tits' or 'She's Appearing in TV Commercials,' or it doesn't sell. But with junior high school pupils, just watching them mess around is enough to make a hit."
Seijunkei, a magazine that features only models under 15 clad in skimpy swimsuits, works on a similar policy.
Though its concept is obscene, it skirts the law by making sure its models don't appear indecent.
"Hard-core fans know how far they can go before they break the rules," Editor-in-chief Kiyotsugiu Kawabata tells Spa!
"They know how to please themselves by using their imagination."
Ura Bubka, yet another men's magazine devoted to schoolgirl sexuality, has also found prepubescence profitable.
"Our very first edition featured (schoolgirl band) Morning Musume and we've grown since then. A feature asking reader's opinions about our belief that having sex with schoolgirls is wrong attracted enormous attention," Editor-in-Chief Masashi Okazaki tells Spa! "All our stories about junior high schoolgirls are popular,coming in first or second for popularity with every reader survey."
Where these magazines cater to warped imaginations, other publications, like Chii-chan, are far more graphic,using illicit photos of models no taller than 150 centimeters tall to accompany erotic stories.
"With the popularity of schoolgirl bands, I knew it'd be a hit, but we have been far more successful than even I imagined. I was surprised by how many readers told us they'd been looking for something like what we produced," Chii-chan's Kenichi Washimiya tells Spa! "We sell out within two days of going onto the stands."
Even more sickeningly graphic have been the "Itazura" series of "Legal Pedophilia" videos currently selling like hot cakes.
The videos star Wakana Tachiki, a 19-year-old who looks every bit of the elementary schoolgirl she plays in the lurid video series that has stretched to 24 movies since first being released in September last year.
"We initially made them for hard-core fans," Kayoko Kikuchi, spokeswoman for Gloryquest, makers of the "Itazura" movies, says.
"But they soon became our most reliable products, racking up sales of over 20,000 units each in an industry where a hit is said to be selling more than 3,000 videos."
That's not to say that the movies have not encountered some troubles, especially for the series' childlike star Tachiki.
"A police officer told me off when we filmed a scene of me in a school uniform carrying my elementary schoolgirl's bag as I romped through a park," she tells Spa!
A borderline pedophile explains the current trend for men to seek out younger girls for fantasies while still desiring dates with women of their own age.
"Once you get a girl over high school age, taking them out becomes a pain. Junior high schoolgirls are still pure. I don't particularly see myself as a pedophile. All I see is that I'm widening my strike zone to make my pitching more effective," he says.
While much of mainstream Japan may be willing to accept the sick practice, not all are.
"Even though (the 'Legal Pedophile' videos) are my company's product," sick stick flick spin doctor Kikuchi tells Spa! "if I ever caught my boyfriend with one, I'd castrate him."
