University soccer team red carded for gang raping schoolgirl 2004,12,9
Shukan Gendai 12/18 By Ryann Connell
Kokushikan University's soccer squad rose to be one of Japan's premier college clubs thanks to its outstanding teamwork, but it's teamwork of a different kind that has it causing headlines at the moment, according to Shukan Gendai (12/18).
A whopping 15 members of the university club were arrested Dec. 1 for gang-raping a 15-year-old schoolgirl.
Allegedly leading the pack rape was defender Takashi Hamano, who was arrested for breaking the Child Welfare Law.
His 14 teammates arrested at the same time were slapped with the lesser charge of breaking a Tokyo Metropolitan Government ordinance set up to create a wholesome environment for youths by purportedly performing indecent acts on a girl they knew to be underage.
Ironically, the soccer players were arrested the same day a new law specifically outlawing gang rape came onto the books.
"People called Hamano the Hammer, or Hammer-san. He's got a pretty craggy face and gets around in hip-hop gear. He used to go to clubs in Shibuya two or three times a month to try and pick up girls, but he didn't seem to be too popular among them. He didn't have a girlfriend," an unnamed member of the college soccer team tells Shukan Gendai.
Hamano was also regarded as a notorious, though generally unsuccessful, pick-up artist in Machida, the suburban Tokyo bedtown where his university is located.
He met the schoolgirl allegedly raped by the soccer team while on the prowl in Machida and they exchanged e-mail addresses.
Hamano apparently asked the girl out on a date several times after their initial meeting, but she turned him down every time.
That is until June 2. Having just reached a traumatic end to a relationship, the schoolgirl finally agreed when Hamano asked her out.
It turned out to be a tragic and perilous decision.
"As soon as Hamano met up with the girl, he abused her for turning him down so many times in the past and started threatening her with retaliation if she tried to get away from him," a police insider tells Shukan Gendai.
"He took her to a park and demanded she have sex with him there. Later, he dragged her back to an apartment belonging to his teammate, Satoshi Sasakawa."
Upon arriving at Sasakawa's place, Hamano sent out an e-mail to seven or eight of his teammates, urging them to join him if they wanted to "have sex with a schoolgirl."
They, and others, answered the call and for the following seven hours, they are accused of repeatedly violating the young girl, especially Hamano.
Soccer team members waited for their "turn" with the victim from night until the early hours of the following morning.
Altogether, about 20 young men turned up at Sasakawa's apartment, including those whose "turn" with the schoolgirl didn't come around by the time they finally decided to let the tortured girl go free.
"I've seen two women go into the apartment before. I always thought it was strange that there were so many guys going in and out," a neighbor of Sasakawa's tells Shukan Gendai, referring to the scene of the heinous pack-rape.
"The guys inside always played really loud music with an incredibly heavy bass, so I couldn't tell for sure what was going on inside. I was surprised why it had suddenly gone so quiet in there over the past couple of months, though."
