Guest -> Entering Japan with a criminal record (2/20/2005 5:41:45 AM)

Hi

I have a big problem and i really hope someone can give me answer. The thing is i am studying japanese at the university of Gothenburg here in Sweden. My one and only dream is to go to Japan and study there. But i have one problem i'm in the Swedish criminal record. Before you judge me i'd like to explain why, the first thing is when i was young and an older guy made me help him steal cigarettes, it was a minor crime and i was only sentenced to pay a fine. The whole thing would have disappeared from the records this year if it hadn't been for an incident in 2003 when i was in a fight with a schoolmate, he was a troublemaker and he provoked me. The guys teeth broke and i was sentenced for assault. So now i have two incidents in the criminal record without beeing anything near a criminal. I have never used any drugs and have never been involved in any real criminality.

But the thing is really bugging me, i can't get it out of my mind, what if i can't come to Japan? It would be years of studying down the drain. I've read on this site http://www.mofa.go.jp/j_info/visit/visa/10.html and it says that it's not a problem as long as i haven't been to jail or been involved with any drugs wich a have not. I'm planning to study atleast a whole year so i'd need a visa.

It would ruin my whole life if these incidents would destroy my dreams. They won't disappear from the Swedish criminal records for like 8 years or something, i do not want to wait that long.

Could someone give me some info on this, it would be very appreciated.
