The Uneasy Sleep of Japan's Dead

By George F. Will Sunday, August 20, 2006; Page B07
Leftist ideology causes South Korea's regime to cultivate victimhood and resentment of a Japan imagined to have expansionism in its national DNA.

The choice by China's regime is more interesting. Marxism is bankrupt and causes cognitive dissonance as China pursues economic growth by markedly un-Marxist means.
So China's regime, needing a new source of legitimacy, seeks it in memories of resistance to Japanese imperialism.

Actually, most of China's resistance was by Chiang Kai-shek's forces, Mao's enemies. And Mao, to whom there is a sort of secular shrine in Beijing,
killed millions more Chinese than even Japan's brutal occupiers did.

the Japanese, who planned to destroy the Korean soil

Some Koreans claim that locust trees found all over Korea were planted by the Japanese, who planned to
destroy the Korean soil. Is that historically correct?...

Although it is generally known that locust trees, better known as acacia trees in Korea, were introduced by
the Japanese around 1890, there are no official records about the intention and many stories involving the
Japanese remain part of oral history. It is said that the Korean name, akasia had its origin in Japanese,
nise-akashia, which was shortened from the tree's scientific name, Robinia pseudo-acacia.

Roh Moo Hyun said

In fact, on Thursday, South Korea's President Roh Moo Hyun said that his country must strengthen its military deterrence,
not against the North, but against Japan, because of a worsening territorial dispute.

A New Kind of Pride

But the president may be picking the wrong fight. While Japan-bashing is a generally accepted practice across
South Korea, a growing number of citizens worry that such populist outbursts are damaging the country's reputation,
making it seem backward and isolated from the world.

Korean's Anti-Japan activity on Ben Roethlisberger Official Blog

Meanwhile, they're still going bonkers over at Ben Roethlisberger Official Blog,
where fans were still commenting deep into the night, including this post which came in at 3:19 a.m.:

“Hello? Netizens? Many people Tokdo (Dokdo, Tokto = Korean Word) Island (Dakesimar = Japanish Word) Japan's territory be and know that write “East Sea” that is “Japan Sea”.
However, Tokdo Island is Korean territory. It is historically attested truth.
That had been the Korean country 600 years ago from now, “Shilla” conquered Tokdo Island.
Japan did not approach in Tokdo Island ever since.
However, Japan tries to plunder our territory and territorial water recently.
This is illegal act. Tokdo Island is Korean territory and “East Sea” is Korean territorial water.
Thank You.” ? Korean.

Anti-Japanese sentiments is Korean's base of energy

Katsuhiro Kuroda
From Sankei Shimbun Mar25.1997

When I talked to young Korean politician, who was a minister before,we talked about the anti-Japanese sentiments in Korea, and about so called "kenkan" sentiments(the feeling to dislike Korean) in Japan.
He said "It is true that Korean people have anti-Japanese sentiments. However,it seems the sentiments issue have been reported to Japan in exaggerated way. Please do not write about the issue so much because your report might cause misunderstandings".

According to him,the anti-Japanese sentiments is not the one against Japanese people, but the one ,in many cases ,for Korean people in order to pluck up courage.

He also said that Korean government sometimes use the anti-Japanese sentiments card to maintain support of the citizen ,or to avert the citizen's eyes from some domestic problems . I think his story is true because ,he said,he also used the anti-Japanese card when he was minister.

An officer of Japanese embassy in Korea, recently, gave a speech at a famous university in Seoul. After the speech, a student asked him about the Japanese government's poll result which showed that Japanese people's "kenkan" feelings was getting stronger. The student said" There is no doubt that Koreans dislike Japanese, but I can't understand that Japanese people dislike Koreans. Why?".

When I had a lunch with a Japanese senior politician,we also talked about Japanese people's "kenkan" sentiments. He said " I think it is as the matter of course that Japanese people beginning to have some kind of "kenkan" sentiments. If you had been blamed by other country to apologize or reflect yourself many many times, there is no doubt that you dislike the country which blame you."

There is also another story. When I gave a speech in a local town in Japan,I was asked by some people including Korean exchange student. They said " It seems that the Korean people's anti-Japanese sentiments have been reported to Japan in exaggerated way. We hope that Japanese mass media deal the issue calmly."

Now ,I'm writing these stories because I recently experienced or heard this kind of matters frequently by chance. To tell the truth, I've been interested in the dilemma of anti-Japanese sentiments :Truth and fiction of the sentiments.

Before we argue about the core of the anti-Japanese sentiments, I would like to point out as follows.

The anti-Japanese sentiments is not something special issue for Korean people since long time ago. Therefore, the anti-Japan sentiments is a casual theme to argue in Korea. They are not always blaming Japan with strong will.
Korean people are very interested in Japan. There is a lot of information of Japan in Korea. Although they have the anti-Japan sentiments, they also think that they should learn from Japan. There are criticism and praise in their mind about Japan. For Korean people, the anti-Japanese sentiments is not something which portrays whole Koreans' feelings about Japan, but it is only one part of whole image of Japan .

On the other hand,Japanese people are not usually interested in Korea. There aren't many information about Korea in Japan. Japanese people look at Korea only when some big accident or big political scandal happened in Korea. In this situation, when some anti-Japanese movement was informed to Japan, Japanese people were really impressed by the news, and the news create the image of Korea in Japanese people's mind. Japanese people ,therefore, accept the anti-Japanese sentiments as the one which is much stronger than the sentiments Korean people actually have.

Well,I would like to talk about the core of the anti-Japanese sentiments. For instance,as you know, Japan and Korea are going to co-host the World Cup soccer in 2002. However,Koreans don't have any intention to co-host it. They only have a intention to "competitively"-host it.

Recently I watched a popular TV program in Korea. The program was doing a campaign:Let's make the traffic system better than Japan! The program introduced Japan's traffic system ,and appealed Koreans to "Learn from Japan, and Don't be defeated by Japan". This is really "competitive-host".
I think this TV program did a good job because I ,recently, saw many cars stop on the stop line at crossings in Seoul.

Thus,Korean people have a "Don't be defeated by Japan" mind in the core of their anti-Japan sentiments. Because they have this kind of competitive spirit, they sometimes beat Japan to satisfy their soul. Regarding to comfort women issue, they blame Japan on the issue to satisfy(?) their soul because they know that the issue is Japan's weak point.
As many people point out,the anti-Japanese sentiment is Koreans ' base of energy. Korean people can keep their spirits up because of their anti-Japan sentiments. Anti-Japanese sentiments: The base of energy.
Considering the anti-Japanese sentiments like this, you can say that they have the sentiments for themselves. May be we,Japanese , should not worry about the anti-Japanese sentiments so much. I recently think that Japanese people should consider the sentiments objectively and calmly.

By the way,I think that Korean mass media haven't reported the reason or back ground of growing "kenkan" sentiments in Japan. May be Korean mass media are ignoring the "kenkan" sentiments regarding it as something beside the point. But I hope that Korean mass media report Japanese feelings about Korea or Korean people, and I hope that Korean people argue about "kenkan" sentiments whether it is reasonable or not.

Call to boycott Korean businesses in Saipan over planned protest

A dispute is brewing on the main island of Saipan in Northern Marianas, over next week's historic visit by the Japanese imperial couple.
Some Saipan residents are threatening to boycott Korean businesses if they go ahead with a planned protest during the visit.
The Korean Association of Saipan is threatening a protest to demand an apology from the Emperor for Japanese atrocities during World War II.
a Saipan resident, John S Blanco is calling locals to action.
Mr Blanco is calling on fellow indigenous people of Chamorro and Carolinians to boycott Korean businesses on the island, if their planned protest goes ahead next Tuesday.
In his statement to the media, Mr. Blanco says now is not the time to demand an apology from Japanese Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko.

Korea must face the true history

January 17, 2007
February 1946, a new clinic opened near Hakata Port.
It was actually an abortion clinic.

The reason was so many women evacuated from Korean peninsula were pregnant as the result of raping.
According to the report by Dr Hashizume in 10 Jun 1946, most cases were raped by Koreans, second was Russians.

Abortion was illegal at the time but the doctors wanted to prevent the women to commit suicide.
There was no anesthesia because of lack of supplies but the operations were continued until late 1947.
"So Far from the Bamboo Grove" is not fiction, it's true story.
