China warns on western brands

BEIJING [22.01.07] Chinese officials in Shanghai have warned local consumers against the quality of some
imported western branded garments after testing found high levels of formaldehyde and unacceptable pH levels
in some fabrics.
In a notice posted on its web-site, the Shanghai Municipal Industrial and Commercial Administration said quality
control tests were conducted on garments for sale in Shanghai. "Including luxury brands Armani, Burberry,
Polo Ralph Lauren, ST Dupont and MaxMara", said PA newswire. All but one of the 25 garments were imported.

“Many Chinese consumers see foreign brands as likely to be of much higher quality than the often shoddy
goods churned out by many local producers that have yet to develop a reputation worth safeguarding,” said
The Financial Times in reaction to the statement.
