Schwarzenegger speech

``They try to stay Mexican but try to be in America, so there's this back and forth,'' Schwarzenegger said,
surrounded by Asian-Americans at a Moon Festival celebration in Los Angeles.
``What I say to Mexicans is you have got to go immerse yourself and assimilate into American culture and become part of the American fabric.
That's how America will embrace you.
``The secret -- if there is one -- to success,
I was embraced by the American people because I love America,
I love the language and I made every effort to become American.''

``This is something I've been talking about for many many years. People ask me what is the secret to success in America,'' he responded.
``This is my advice as an immigrant how to be successful in America and how to be accepted in America.''

Schwarzenegger campaign immediately defended the remarks,
saying they are consistent with his views and experiences as an immigrant who came from Austria, originally as a bodybuilding contestant.
``As an immigrant himself, this is something the governor feels strongly about for those who come here in search of the American dream,''

Japan's underground economy

According to estimates, foreign workers send home more than 900 billion yen (US$8.16 billion) annually -
a lifesaver for their poor families back home.
Kadokura, who is investigating Japan's underground economy, says at the top of the remittance list are Chinese, Filipinos,
Thais and South Koreans.

Last year, Japanese authorities estimated that there were 250,000 illegal workers in the country,
many of them Bangladeshis, Pakistanis, Burmese and Sri Lankans. While actual figures are hard to come by given
that most workers are undocumented, Kadokura says Chinese, Koreans and Filipinos send home 608.2 billion yen ($5.50 billion) annually.

the shooting deaths of two Korean-speaking men

The Alameda County district attorney's office has cleared two Dublin police officers of any criminal wrongdoing in the shooting deaths of two Korean-speaking men on Aug. 11.

In a March 14 letter to Commander Gary Thuman, an Alameda County Sheriff's Department employee who serves as Dublin's police chief,
District Attorney Tom Orloff said the shooting deaths of Kwang Tae Lee, 61, and Richard Kim, 49, after the officers responded to a disturbance call were "tragic."

But Orloff, whose letter was made public this week after a newspaper filed a Public Records Act request,
said, "There is insufficient evidence to prove criminal liability" against Dublin deputies Tara Russell and David Taylor.

Lee and Kim were shot after police responded to Kim's home at 3000 Innisbrook Lane in Dublin about 11:40 p.m. Aug. 11
after neighbors reported a domestic struggle.

Dublin police said that when the officers arrived,
they found Lee, who was Kim's brother-in-law, attempting to gain entry to an upstairs room while wielding a knife.

Police said the officers shot Lee after he declined to put the knife down.

During the shooting, one bullet passed through the bedroom door and struck Kim,
who was on the other side of the door, according to police.

Lee was pronounced dead at the scene and Kim died three days later.

Dutch, Moroccan FMs grasp immigration nettle

Netherlands wants third-generation immigrants to lose their other nationality, defends Dutch culture test.

THE HAGUE - Dutch Foreign Minister Ben Bot discussed the prickly topic of immigration with his visiting
Moroccan counterpart Mohamed Benaissa on Thursday.

Bot defended the Dutch culture tests, which come into force on Wednesday, that would-be immigrants from outside
Europe, Japan and the United States will have to pass in their home countries before being able to apply for
residence status.

"This proves that we are taking the immigration process very seriously," he insisted at a joint press conference
with Benaissa.

Californians frustrated with levels of illegal immigration

an estimated 3 million undocumented people live in the state
called the bill a small and much-needed step in immigration reform.
'People are just flying in here. There's too many people and they're not assimilating.
There's crime, there's big-time racial tensions in our schools, and I also see the blame and wrath is being directed at the immigrants themselves.

Many also said they fear a sweeping provision that applies criminal penalties to anyone who assists an illegal immigrant.
'Many of our families are mixed families where we may have an undocumented members,' said Eun Sook Lee,
director of the National Korean American Service & Education Consortium in Los Angeles, raising the specter of men and women facing arrest for protecting family members.
She and others said the bill also could apply to social agencies or even churches that provide job training and other services and don't ask questions about legal status.

VIDEO: UC Under Fire

The suit filed on behalf of nearly 60,000 out-of-state college students from 19 states claims California circumvented federal law in 2002,
granting resident status to illegal aliens for tuition purposes at California's public colleges, including the University of California and California State University systems.
Nine students brought the suit, which seeks to repeal the 2002 law that saves illegal immigrant students between $10,000 to $20,000 a year in out-of-state fees.

"It's pretty ridiculous how much more we pay," U.C. Davis student and Hawaii native Chaning Jang said.
"They are giving these kind of tuition kickbacks to illegal immigrants that are not even going to work here when they are done with college."

illegal alien migration

Dear President Bush:

Medicaid is a welfare program, enacted as a safety net for the poor and indigent. But the program has grown to care for over 46 million Americans
and now legal and illegal individuals at a cost of $338 billion, for FY 2006.

Last year an elderly Korean man was admitted to the ICU, thank GOD this was not my wife’s patient.
The man had TB and ended up dying from it a couple of days later. Didn’t we eradicate TB 40 years ago?
Would you want your wife exposed to TB? [As a note from this journalist--illegal alien migration has brought 16,000 new cases of tuberculosis into this country in the past five years
and it is spreading because illegals work in fast-food, construction and they stand in line at the movies, grocery and retail stores. Their kids go to your kids’ schools.
Thus, you and your family are at risk everywhere you go. The average illegal alien will infect from 10 to 50 Americans with TB depending on public contact.]

Council Votes to Enforce Immigration Laws

President Bush's recent pronouncement that his ultimate goal was to expel every single undocumented immigrant from the country is not just a surrender to the far right

In the last several years, millions of undocumented aliens have illegally immigrated to the United States.
They have breached our nation’s immigration laws, displaced many American citizens from jobs and placed an increased financial burden on many state and local governments.

EUROPE'S MUSLIMS: Moderates Raise Voices to Influence the Young

Los Angeles Times, CA - Sep 17, 2005
Like three of the July 7 bombers, Zeena is the Yorkshire-born son of immigrants. But far from attacking the country that bore him, the 45-year-old has embraced it.
He is not only British, he says, but English ? because England is the only home he has ever known, even if he is a Muslim and has an Indian name.
He is aware of the eerie parallels between his life and those of some of the bombers.
As a young man, he faced racism from British nationalists.

Monday, August 15, 2005 Getting tough on illegal housing
A surge in illegal dwellings has prompted several North Jersey towns to increase efforts to evict this type of substandard housing.
The illegal housing is a boon for financially strapped homeowners who convert attics or basements into moneymaking rental apartments.
And the practice continues to be supported by renters, many of whom are minorities or recent immigrants, desperate to find cheap housing.
Illegal dwellings are more than just a nuisance for neighbors, who complain of noise, extra garbage and an excess of vehicles.
The overcrowded homes also pose safety hazards to tenants and emergency personnel.
Officials also worry that the illegal residents will overburden municipal services and schools, while property values slowly decrease.
The problem has grown tremendously over the past five years, said William Dressel, executive director of the New Jersey League of Municipalities.
"It's a major concern that towns across the state are dealing with. It affects quality of life, public health and safety.

Spain struggles with race riots

Tuesday, 8 February, 2000, 15:30 GMT
Riot police in Spain have again clashed with hundreds of protesters on the third consecutive day
of violence directed against immigrants from North Africa.

The local immigrant community has asked the authorities for protection after rioting left their property ransacked and their cars overturned.

Clouds of smoke wafted over the south-eastern Spanish region of Almeria as a plastic recycling factory, set alight by anti-immigrant protestors, burnt to the ground.

There were clashes in and around the Moroccan quarter of El Ejido as riot police tried to clear roads blocked by the demonstrators.
Spanish state radio reported that more than 30 people were injured and seven others arrested as police prevented protesters marching on El Ejido.

Stabbings

The violence erupted on Saturday when a Moroccan man was arrested on suspicion of stabbing
to death a Spanish woman in a local market.

Turn America into a bilingual or multi-lingual and bicultural country.

History shows that no nation
can survive the tension, conflict, and antagonism of two or more competing languages and cultures.
It is a blessing for an individual to be bilingual; however, it is a curse for a society to be bilingual.

"The historical scholar Seymour Lipset put it this way: 'The histories of bilingual and bi-cultural
societies that do not assimilate are histories of turmoil, tension, and tragedy.' Canada, Belgium,
Malaysia, Lebanon all face crises of national existence in which minorities press for autonomy,
if not independence. Pakistan and Cyprus have divided. Nigeria suppressed an ethnic rebellion.
France faces difficulties with Basques, Bretons, and Corsicans."

Violence Erupts at O.C. Protest

May 26, 2005
Three people were injured and at least eight arrested Wednesday in Garden Grove after a motorist drove into a crowd of 300 demonstrators
protesting a speech by the founder of the Minuteman Project, authorities said.
The Minuteman Project is a citizens group that patrols the U.S.-Mexico border in an effort to stop illegal immigration.
A witness, Eric Garcia, 22, of Anaheim said the evening turned ugly about 9 p.m. after the talk.
He said some protesters were in a driveway when someone in a car tried to leave and made contact with the group.
"Then all hell broke loose," Garcia said. "People started throwing things, like rocks and bricks and stuff."
Within minutes, he said, there were about 30 police cars, and dozens of officers on horseback or wearing SWAT gear.

Group says Metrolink monument anti-U.S.

BALDWIN PARK -- An anti-illegal immigration group wants a Metrolink station monument removed, claiming the passage "This land was Mexican once, was Indian always and is, and will be again" encourages a Mexico re-conquering of California movement.
Another passage reads, "It was better before they came."

"I consider the two passages to be incredibly offensive and seditious in nature ... and it's something we won't tolerate," said Joseph Turner, executive director of Ventura-based Save Our State.

The activist group recently pressured a Spanish-language TV station to take down billboards referring to "Los Angeles, Mexico."

Save Our State has now set its sights on the monument at the city's Metrolink station. The anti-illegal immigration group plans a protest at the train station on Saturday.
The monument was erected in 1993 and no one ever complained about it before.
