What's it like to be a nurse in a Japanese hospital? Shukan Tokuho (3/22) delved into data from the Ministry of Health and Welfare and other sources to produce 19 tasty bits of "trivia" --- information about the lives of angels of mercy. Taken together, the items are certainly not the sort of thing that would encourage a young woman to take up nursing as a career. In fact, some are downright embarrassing. For instance, nursing school students are taught to regard the anus as a barometer of health. And to put this theory into practice, the students are obliged peer up the backsides of their fellow classmates as part of their training.
"We used a tool to spread it open, and then perform a check all the way to where it puckers," recalls a 28-year-old graduate student. "I was so mortified, I was almost ready to drop out and return home."
Nor is the back door the only aperture that receives attention. Many nurses, Shukan Tokuho claims, are also known to keep adult toys in their bag of tricks.
"At one time vibrators were used by doctors to treat female hysteria," says a 29-year-old angel of mercy employed at a metropolitan hospital. "But the word got around among nurses and many of them began pleasuring themselves with rotary vibrators."
Not that opportunities for sex are all that rare. High on the scoring list are the sales representatives from pharmaceutical manufacturers, who make frequent sales calls on hospitals.
"Many times they'll make their sales pitch for products to a senior nurse at one-on-one meetings," says a nurse at a national hospital. "To butter her up, they will invite her out to dinner and then often wind up in bed later. It's rumored that with these women sex toys tend to get used and the play sometimes turns pretty wild," she giggles.
Other fascinating tidbits included in Shukan Tokuho:
- Nurses on night duty at hospital nurse stations have found a godsend in the computer terminals, where they can relieve their stress by anonymously posting abusive graffiti aimed at reviled supervisors or superiors.
- Despite precautions, pilferage of medications is common. According to one nurse, sleep medications and stimulants such as ephedrine-based products --- which can be used to heighten the pleasures of sex --- are reportedly the most popular items.
- Some nurses have been known to take up part-time jobs in the sex trade, appearing in adult videos or working as masseuses. It is through word of mouth by their colleagues that others are recruited into the business. Money is one attraction, but still another is to escape the confinements of their largely cloistered existence for excitement's sake.
- Due to shortages of trained nurses, the directors and staff of temp help agencies that specialize in dispatching nurses are raking in large profits these days. "A lot of nurses have taken the opportunity to leave the job and move into this field," says a 25-year-old at a private hospital. "
Despite the flaws in the system, Shukan Tokuho acknowledges that nursing can be a singularly demanding life. With irregular shifts brought on by personnel shortages, the ladies in white may put in as many as 14 hours a day, and because meals tend to be grabbed on the run, the average nurse is said to loose as much as 5 kilograms of her body weight during the first two years on the job. Even during the first months of their own pregnancies, nurses may be required to attend expectant mothers in labor and in the delivery room --- which for reasons unknown seems to have resulted in a higher than normal percentage of miscarriages or abnormalities among nurses themselves. The years of physical and psychological stress, moreover may very well take a severe toll on their health; a career in the medical profession, the article suggests, may shorten average life expectancy by between three to five years.
