"Mama, it was terrible. Sensei came into my room and did all these strange things to me. He kissed me and he touched my boobs. Then he ordered me never to tell anybody what had happened, so I haven't said a word," Shukan Bunshun (5/29) quotes the 13-year-old figure skater saying to her mother before bursting into tears.
The girl and her parents have pressed charges against "Sensei," a term of reverence meaning teacher by which they referred to Yasusuke Sakai, a former national junior figure skating champion and one of the sport's top coaches and administrators in Japan.
They accuse Sakai of raping the girl, whom he frequently had stay over at his Nagoya home while he was supposed to be giving her figure skating lessons, early on the morning of April 11.
"He was a really kind teacher and his personality has helped earn him a reputation as a good coach," the parent of one of Sakai's other former charges tells Shukan Bunshun.
But while some may have nice things to say about Sakai, it's a different story to what his alleged victim and those related to her are saying.
"Sakai sneaked into her room, got on top of her and held his hand over her mouth while he shook her awake. He stripped her off and told her that her little sister would never be able to skate if she made any trouble. That's about all the girl has been able to say about the incident since she first talked. If she tries to talk any more about it, I think it'd drive her crazy," one of the girl's relatives tells the weekly.
When the girl's parents heard her tale of what had happened at Sakai's home, her mother left her in the care of a family member and headed off to the coach's house to collect her daughter's belongings.
She was greeted at door by the coach, who immediately kowtowed in apology.
"I'm sorry. I was drowsy and thought it was my wife," Shukan Bunshun quotes Sakai as saying.
The weekly notes that Sakai's story may have had more credibility had it not been for the fact that he had been sleeping beside his wife in their first floor bedroom and the girl had bedded down in a room on the second floor of the home.
After initially leaving Nagoya for a while, the girl's mother was convinced to return to the city by Sakai's wife, who told her the coach desperately wanted to talk to her.
Both Sakai and his wife repeatedly apologized to the girl's mother, but the relative of the girl says the coach was showing a different kind of remorse to other people.
"Sakai was laughing about the case, telling people that there'd be too much shame for him to stay in Japan once people learned what had happened and how he would go off to Australia and coach skating there, or take the girl's little sister to South Korea and use that country as a base," the alleged victim's family member says.
When the purported victim's family confronted Sakai with their lawyer, the coach admitted to the rape, the weekly says, but repeatedly made excuses and basically left his wife to do most of the talking.
"Sakai and his wife cried and told the lawyer they'd sell their house and give the proceeds to the girl, or leave her all their life insurance money and whatever inheritance they collected. They promised the earth as long as he was forgiven. Then, one day, Sakai got himself a lawyer, who contacted us and said the coach had developed an ulcer and had been hospitalized for treatment. That was the last contact we had with him or his representatives," the relative says.
The club where Sakai worked as a coach fired him on April 29.
He has since dismissed his lawyer.
Repeated efforts to contact either Sakai or members of his family have failed, though signs are he now appears to have changed tack and will fight the rape allegations.
The girl Sakai is alleged to have violated, however, is in no position to show such resolve.
"She's already lost 8 kilograms since the day of the incident and has been diagnosed as suffering from post traumatic stress disorder. She's taking six different types of tranquilizers just to cope," her relative tells Shukan Bunshun. "She's waking up with nightmares nearly every night and the only way she can get to sleep is if her mom lies down beside her and holds her hand for reassurance until she can drop off."
