Japanese press restraints under the pressure by Chinese authorities
Chinese authorities are adding pressure on Japanese media not to let them report the things inconvenient to China. If China determines that Japan reports against Chinese official lines, China will kick out the Japanese correspondents by compulsion in accordance with Japan-China press agreement. (See below). This menaces the Japanese press, as they now can't fail to cover the Beijing Olympic-related reports.
The reports from Japanese press about the food-poisoning case caused by Chinese products or the outbreak of the current Tibet issue were unreliable enough to make Japanese viewer (reader) suspect of the certain pressure from the Chinese authorities. On the other day, a TV reporter clearly confessed to the viewer that Japanese press is being controlled by Chinese authorities.
The above describes that China is middling in internal affairs of Japan, and moreover, menacing another nation.
Please post your comment or add more information about it.
- This is it. I find it a BIG problem. It's a genuine 'interference in internal affairs.
Bankisya's report (NTV news report)
The city of Nagano got 'ordered' by China
- For the Olympic torch relay on April 26th, China ordered the controls on press, protests and protest signs (such as 'Free Tibet'). Also China ordered Nagano officials to hold up a propaganda sign, but it was not acceptable according to the city code.
It's not clear if the city of Nagano urged the press to follow that guideline by China. It wasn't mentioned in the report.
Japan-China press agreement
Outline
- Japanese government should not take a hostile view of China
- Japan should not follow U.S. that plays trick to divide China into 2 (namely, treat Taiwan as China)
- Do not constrict the normalization of Japan-China relationship
The agreement implies that Japan should NOT report anything inconvenient to the Chinese authorities, NOT constrict the Japan-China relationship and NOT recognize Taiwan as a nation.
Any violation causes the Chinese government to banish the Japanese press from China.
Some people think the agreement disable the creditable reports about China in Japan.
Japanese PM Fukuda's stance
'Japan would not mix politics with the Beijing Olympics
★Japanese PM Fukuda sent a private letter to Chinese President about Tibet issue (April 16th)
The Japanese politicians Ibuki (LDP) and Kitagawa (Komeito Party) met Chinese President Hu Jintao on April 16th morning in Beijing. This was the first time Hu Jintao met Japanese executive member of the ruling parties since the Tibet issue occurred. Ibuki handed the private letter from Fukuda to the Chinese president that suggested a peaceful resolution on Tibet.
Hu Jintao said that the development of bilateral relationship was active, and expressed his expectation for his visit to Japan in May and meeting Japanese PM Fukuda.
The Japanese side would urge China to make efforts to secure food safety after the food-poisoning case caused by the Chinese dumplings, in order to pave the way for President Hu Jintao's much-anticipated trip.
The Japanese politicians said that Japanese government would not mix the Olympics with politics. The Fukuda's plan to urge the participating leaders to support the Beijing Olympic at the Hokkaido Summit in July would be also mentioned during the stay.
