They admitted inventing its kinky features, or rather deliberately mistranslating them from the original gossip magazine. |
In fact, this is far from the general Japanese' behavior or sense of worth. |

Adventurous clientele enjoying Osaka S&M bar
Shukan Bunshun 12/24 By Ryann Connell
While most of Japan is languishing under the weight of a seemingly endless economic slump, Shukan Bunshun says one area in Osaka is enjoying a heady boom - of a literal and figurative sort.
A new matchmaking bar unique to Japan's shores has opened in one of the city's inner suburbs and anyone's welcome to visit it - provided that they're either a sadist or a masochist.
“I've always been a sadist. Even when I was a little girl used to get a thrill by kicking over other kids' sandcastles.
But as I got older, I found the only way I could satisfy my sadistic tendencies was to go to S&M clubs, which I found boring and antiseptic.
I opened the bar because I wanted somewhere to offer sadists or masochists a way to enjoy themselves without having to go through the club scene,” says the bar's operator, a 27-year-old madam with a 100-centimeter chest who calls herself Mama Ri.
“I'm pretty confident we offer customers a whip-cracking good time.”
Shukan Bunshun says that the bar is indeed doing wild business.
But, unlike Mama Ri, most of its clients fell into S&M by accident.
“Until three years ago, I could never imagine getting involved in something like this,” says Akiko, a 43-year-old mother of three and regular patron of the bar.
“Then, one day, I found an S&M magazine which had a picture of a woman getting whipped.
When I saw that, the lower half of my body just went hot.
I saw the bar's ad in the magazine and decided to visit.
Once I saw all the whips hanging up, and ropes and stocks in booths to bind customers, I was hooked.”
Toshio, a 45-year-old office worker, tells a similar story.
“I started to go bald a few years back so I bought a wig.
One day, the wind blew it off just as I was walking past a group of high school girls.
They laughed at me and I was really humiliated, but the feeling gave me an incredible thrill.
After that, I became a masochist - I had to be humiliated, I loved the pain.
The bar's better than an S&M club because at a club it's always the same thing - the madam whips you a couple of times, sticks her stilleto (*2) heel where it hurts, then asks you to fork out 50,000 yen.
The only thing painful about S&M clubs is the price.
Here at the bar, at least you know the sadism is real,” he says.
Mama Ri tells Shukan Bunshun that the sadism at her bar may be real, but it's all good-natured fun.
She says the bar has a broad clientele, whose ages range from the 20s to the 70s, their occupations covering all walks of life.
Mama Ri says her patrons mix easily and enjoy each other's company, and that her bar has helped many strained couples revive floundering marriages.
“We had a couple come in here one night.
The husband announced it was his wife's birthday and that he wanted all the bar's customers to help them celebrate.
The husband forced his wife to lie face down on the floor.
In her only hole available to him, he inserted a lit candle and made his wife into what he ealled a birthday cake.
All the customers sang ‘Happy Birthday to You,’ then the sadists made the masochists try to put out the candle using only their bodies and without knocking the candle over.
It was all very friendly,” Mama Ri says. (RC)
